Precision in Prose: Hearing vs Conference
“Status Hearing”
A member mentioned that the court had scheduled a "status hearing." Because there were motions filed that had not yet been heard and decided, and because the court used the word "status" in the order requiring her to appear, she wasn't sure what to expect and how to prepare.
I didn't blame her for the confusion. I quipped, "Technically, there's no such thing as a 'status hearing.'" This is because a hearing event is different from a status event. So, the term "status hearing" seems to conflate two types of court events.
